Should I have a first look

Before we talk about if you should have a first look, let me explain what it is. Basically it’s summed up as having a private moment to see each other before the ceremony.

This purpose of this post is not to sway you either way about whether you should have a first look or not. I believe your first look, like anything else in your wedding, it should be done in a way that is true to you. You’ll get the pros of each to help you make a choice that feels good for you.

The traditional first look up the aisle is something some people have dreams about. There’s the superstition that it’s bad luck to see each other before the wedding day and there are even jokes that if your future spouse doesn’t cry then you’re going to turn around and demand a do-over.

It’s the moment in all the movies. It’s the moment everyone is looking to see who cries. It can be emotional and beautiful and everything some people dream of. As a photographer I live for that moment just as much as my couples.

Seriously…ALL THE EMOTIONS. Is it weird that I cry too??? It’s magical and beautiful.

But for some they dread that moment, in front of everyone they know as all eyes are on them. A first look can offer a more private option that not only give space for emotion but can also calm those wedding day nerves.

A first look can also give you a little wiggle room in the timeline for photos. All those fun wedding party photos? Well guess what?? You have already seen each other so we can gather the bridal party together and start the party early. Then you have more time for photos after the ceremony and get to having fun with your friends and family sooner!

Alright! These are a few middle ground ideas! Do you know that a first touch, a first drink, and reading letters you’ve written to each other are a thing now? You can do all of these things without even seeing each other! And it has the same added benefit of bringing you a sense of peace just before you walk up the aisle!

Tell me these aren’t just ridiculously cute and fun?? A little booty grab. Laughing at antics. Reading a sweet letter? Let me tell you that I was laughing so hard I was crying during some of these!

And for a little bonus…you can have first looks with dads, moms, and siblings!

Should you have a first look?
